Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige just dropped some seriously candid admissions about the Mahershala Ali Blade reboot, and they’re not flattering. The reboot, originally announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, spent seven years in development limbo before Marvel officially pulled the plug. The project cycled through two different directors (Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange), experienced multiple release date delays, and most importantly, never developed a screenplay that met Marvel’s standards for production.
According to Feige, Marvel’s decision to scrap the project came during a broader creative reset, where the studio realized it had overextended itself into Disney+ streaming content. The Blade script simply wasn’t“insanely great,”and Feige decided it was better to walk away than force a mediocre movie into theaters. Feige was clear that they didn’t want to just put Ali in a leather outfit and have him start fighting vampires. They wanted something genuinely special, and when that didn’t materialize, they made the tough call to stop. The irony? Wesley Snipes brought back the original Blade in 2024’s Deadpool&Wolverine, which pretty much made the entire reboot seem unnecessary before it was even officially cancelled.
This whole situation actually reveals something interesting about where Marvel stands right now.
