That’s exactly what country artist Kelsea Ballerini is sharing about her 2022 divorce from Morgan Evans—and it has nothing to do with the relationship itself. During a Tuesday, June 23 appearance on SoFi’s“Richer Lives”podcast, the 32-year-old singer got candid about the one piece of advice she’d give every woman before walking down the aisle: nail down your financial transparency.

It’s refreshingly practical guidance from someone who’s been through the legal and emotional wringer. Ballerini married Evans, 41, in 2017 after they signed a prenuptial agreement, but four years later, the pair split and finalized their divorce that same year. Per court documents obtained by Us Weekly, they divided joint household property and sold their joint house. Instead of dwelling on the breakup itself, though, Ballerini chose to focus on the one thing that could’ve made the whole process clearer: knowing exactly what each person brought to the table—and where it all went.

Her timing is smart. Women now represent a growing share of household breadwinners, which means protecting individual assets has become less of a taboo topic and more of a financial necessity. As she put it on the podcast: there are“a lot of women breadwinners”now, making it“even more reason to really be transparent on where it’s coming from, how you’re blending it, where it’s going, and how to protect it as a unit.”This isn’t cynicism wrapped in wedding planning—it’s pragmatism. What struck Ballerini most was the importance of staying financially independent even when you’re in what feels like the healthiest relationship imaginable.“You always want to make sure that you are financially independent on your own to the best of your ability even when you’re in the happiest, healthiest relationship that you still have you,”she emphasized. In other words, keep your own financial identity intact. Know your own numbers. Understand what you’re both bringing to the partnership and what you’re building together. It’s not romantic, but it’s honest.

The conversation also gave Ballerini a chance to reflect on how much she’s learned since the split. In the months after their divorce, both she and Evans penned multiple breakup songs about what went wrong. But looking back now, she’s made peace with it all—or at least with how much of it she shared publicly.“I would say that me talking about my music has gone too far and no one needs to know about my real life anymore,”she noted.“It’s in the music and it always will be in the music and that’s always how it’s been, but I think I just talked a lot.”Fair enough.
