Kelly Clarkson Says a Brooklyn Store Gave Her the 'Pretty Woman' Treatment: 'Just Lost a Huge Sale'

Kelly Clarkson says she walked into Art of Play in Brooklyn ready to buy, and walked out feeling like she’d been judged for not looking the part. In a post on X, she said staff looked at her“as if I couldn’t afford it”and even offered to find her“something comparable.”She compared the whole thing to the Pretty Woman scene where Julia Roberts gets snubbed by sales associates, then added the line that’s already making rounds:“Wow, dude. You’re an idiot and just lost a huge sale.”

The store didn’t exactly back down. Art of Play responded through Instagram Stories, sharing messages from customers who describe the shop as welcoming and friendly, which reads less like an apology and more like a soft rebuttal. Meanwhile, Clarkson has been a New York resident since 2023 and wrapped her daytime talk show this past August, so she’s not some tourist wandering in off the street. She’s a neighbor with a receipt and a very public platform.

So now the internet is split between team Kelly and team store, and honestly, almost everyone has a story about being treated badly while shopping. If you’ve ever been ignored, followed, or talked down to in a store, this one probably feels a little personal.

Have you ever been judged in a store for how you looked? Tell us your story in the comments.
