Karen Read's SUV Sells Before the Gavel Drops

Sometimes the story ends before it even starts. That’s what happened when Karen Read’s Lexus—the vehicle at the center of one of Boston’s most divisive legal sagas—never made it to the auction block at Manzi Appraisers in Woburn, Massachusetts.

The SUV was supposed to go up for auction with a barrier to entry: bidders had to prove they had at least $20,000 in the bank just to register. A few people showed up ready to throw down their bids, bidding signs in hand, prepared for what could’ve been a contentious public sale. But then something unexpected happened behind the scenes. An outside group made an offer before the auctioneer even got started, and the whole public spectacle came to an abrupt halt.

Now Read and the mystery buyers are locked in negotiations over the final deal. The proceeds are expected to flow directly into Read’s defense fund—a fitting conclusion given the legal battle that brought us here. Prosecutors accused Read of using the Lexus to strike and kill her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, during a snowy night in Canton back in 2022. The case became a lightning rod for debate about police accountability, evidence handling, and the burden of proof. After her first trial ended in a mistrial, Read was ultimately acquitted at retrial in 2025.

What makes this auction-that-wasn’t particularly interesting is what it signals: the appetite for a public spectacle around Read’s case appears to have shifted. Instead of a theatrical bidding war played out in front of cameras and curiosity seekers, a private resolution behind closed doors seems to have won out. Maybe that’s a sign that even in a case that captivated the region, people are ready to move forward—quietly, without the theater. The vehicle that was once Exhibit A is now just an asset being liquidated to help pay for her freedom. That’s its own kind of narrative closure.
