Prosecutors accused Read of using the Lexus to strike and kill her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, during a snowy night in Canton back in 2022. The case became a lightning rod for debate about police accountability, evidence handling, and the burden of proof. After her first trial ended in a mistrial, Read was ultimately acquitted at retrial in 2025.

What makes this auction-that-wasn’t particularly interesting is what it signals: the appetite for a public spectacle around Read’s case appears to have shifted.
