John Goodman stepped onto the“Digger”premiere red carpet in Los Angeles on Monday looking noticeably different, and the internet noticed fast. The 74-year-old actor, known for decades of roles from Roseanne to The Big Lebowski, has lost 200 pounds, walking the carpet in a black suit with a striped shirt and gray tie alongside his wife, Anna Beth, who wore a maroon dress.

The story behind the transformation isn’t a quick fix. Goodman has been at it since 2007, when he quit drinking and adopted a Mediterranean diet. He later took up boxing, telling Rolling Stone in 2023 that it helped him shed 200 pounds. His philosophy is simple:“This time I wanted to do it slowly, move, exercise. I’m getting to the age where I can’t afford to sit still anymore.”The appearance also comes just months after he fractured his hip in July after slipping on set while in his stockinged feet.

Goodman stars as the President of the United States in“Digger,”the satirical film led by Tom Cruise and directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, with a cast that includes Riz Ahmed, Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Emma D’Arcy. It opens in theaters Friday.
