Joe Manganiello is sharing details about a seven-year health battle that he says began shortly after his 2015 wedding to Sofia Vergara. In his upcoming memoir Bloodlines, he describes multiple colonoscopies and emergency surgery to remove part of his intestines, all without ever getting a formal diagnosis. He also claims the marriage became“devoid of any emotionality whatsoever,”and alleges Vergara refused to hug him when he asked for one and mocked his adoption of a sick five-pound chihuahua named Bubbles, a dog he says he took in while dealing with suicidal ideation.

The book’s account conflicts with what Vergara has said publicly. She has attributed their split to disagreements over having children, saying he wanted them and she didn’t. Manganiello denies that and says he’s still open to fatherhood now that his health has stabilized. Vergara has not responded to any of the memoir’s claims. The couple settled their divorce in April 2024, and Manganiello got engaged to Caitlin O’Connor in 2025. He says he is now symptom-free, off medication, and“can’t believe I’m alive.”

Memoir season in Hollywood is always a he-said-she-said situation, and this one has listeners split. Some are focused on the illness and how it strained the relationship. Others want to hear Vergara’s side before deciding anything. Bloodlines drops Tuesday, October 13.
