Joe Manganiello is sharing his side of a very public marriage, and it’s heavier than anyone expected. In his upcoming memoir Bloodlines, the actor claims that during a near-fatal autoimmune disease, ex-wife Sofía Vergara ridiculed him, refused to hug him even when he begged, and mocked his therapy dog. He says the health crisis began right after their 2015 wedding and included 60 pounds of weight loss and emergency surgery.

Manganiello also disputes the narrative Vergara has shared about their divorce. She has said they split because he wanted kids and she didn’t want to be an“old mom.”He claims the opposite: that he gave up on having children because he feared dying and leaving her with a non-biological child. He credits a Santa Monica shaman and a follow-up surgery for his recovery, and says he wrote the book to set the record straight, telling readers he has“all the scars to prove it.”

These days, Manganiello says he’s symptom-free and engaged to Caitlin O’Connor, and the two are considering having kids together. Vergara has moved on as well, and neither side has offered a fresh response to the memoir’s claims.
