Joe Amabile just proved that a finish time is the least interesting part of a marathon. On Sunday, November 1, the Bachelor Nation favorite crossed the New York City Marathon finish line just 88 days after undergoing surgery to remove a blueberry-sized tumor from his left frontal lobe. He shared the moment on Instagram, writing,“88 days ago I was waking up from brain surgery. Today, finishing the New York marathon.”

His own review of the race might be the best quote of the year:“My worst time yet and my greatest accomplishment at the same time.”Wife Serena Pitt was at the finish line overcome with emotion, calling him her hero and praising the positivity he brought to an incredibly hard season of life. Kaitlyn Bristowe was on hand cheering too, because of course she was.

What makes this more than a feel-good headline is the why. Amabile said setting the marathon goal gave him back a sense of control after his health scare, a reminder that choosing a challenge can be its own kind of recovery. So the medal is nice, but the mindset is the real trophy. Have you ever set a goal that pulled you through a tough time? Tell us about it in the comments.
