Sandra Donally’s service dog Storm usually helps her navigate a world she can’t hear. But just after midnight on a recent night in Staffordshire, England, Storm did something different: she leapt onto Sandra’s bed and sat perfectly still, staring at the landing, refusing every command to go back to sleep. Sandra, who is deaf, got up to check. At the bottom of the stairs lay her husband, Gary, unconscious and bleeding after missing the handrail and falling.
Gary was rushed to Royal Stoke Hospital, where he spent 24 days and underwent reconstructive surgery on his broken jaw. Sandra believes that without Storm’s alert, Gary could have lain there undiscovered until the couple’s usual 6:30 a.m. wake-up, roughly six hours later. Sandra lost her hearing suddenly in 2017 and was paired with Storm in 2024.“I’ll always be so grateful to her for alerting me,”she said.
The story is a striking reminder that service dogs support their owners in ways that go far beyond everyday tasks, and that a four-legged family member paying attention can sometimes mean everything.
