Jada Pinkett Smith is asking a California judge to order Bilaal Salaam, a former friend of Will Smith, to undergo a psychological examination. Salaam is suing her for $3 million, claiming that alleged threats and intimidation forced him to live outside the United States, damaged a long-term relationship, and affected his physical health.
Pinkett Smith’s legal team argues that because Salaam has placed his mental and physical condition at the center of his emotional distress claims, his mental state is now a relevant part of the case. A judge previously granted her anti-SLAPP motion in part, removing several claims from the lawsuit, and denied Salaam’s attempt to amend his complaint in August. No judge has approved the requested exam yet.
A hearing on the matter is scheduled for November 9. The case raises a bigger question about celebrity lawsuits in general: when someone claims emotional harm, does their mental health become fair game in court? Drop your take in the comments.
