Isaiah Washington is opening up about a loss he carried quietly for more than a year. The Grey’s Anatomy alum confirmed that his wife of nearly 29 years, Jenisa Marie Garland, died on June 9, 2025, after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke. She had collapsed at home on May 31, 2025. The couple met in 1995 through comedian Reggie McFadden, married in 1996, and raised three children together: sons Isaiah and Tyme and daughter Iman.

Washington has long kept his marriage out of the spotlight, and that choice continued even in grief, with the news only confirmed publicly in October 2026. In reflecting on his life and career, he credited his wife and kids with shaping who he became, saying they“really make you the best human being that you can be.”He retired from acting in 2023, a decade and a half after his departure from Grey’s Anatomy.

Celebrities including Viola Davis and Tichina Arnold sent condolences on social media, and Washington has used the moment to raise awareness about stroke warning signs, urging people not to ignore persistent or unusual headaches. Hemorrhagic strokes can escalate quickly, and early recognition saves lives.
