A tragic story out of Oklahoma is raising serious questions about warning signs in domestic violence cases. Sara Gilson, a 43-year-old influencer and mother of two, was killed on July 23 in an apparent murder-suicide carried out by her estranged husband, Jeremiah“Shawn”Duffey. According to police records, Duffey reported his Glock 9mm handgun stolen from his vehicle in March 2024, nearly two years before the shooting.

Gilson had publicly accused Duffey of pedophilia in the weeks leading up to her death, posting about it on TikTok. In one video, she said she was“preparing for when Netflix drops a documentary.”Duffey had also been served a protective order in June for allegedly inappropriately touching a 15-year-old at basketball practice. An investigation is ongoing into whether the stolen gun report was legitimate or a way to conceal his access to a weapon.

This heartbreaking case highlights the link between domestic violence, protective orders, and gun access. Gilson’s family is now focused on caring for her two children. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, help is available through the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233. What do you think should happen to people who report guns stolen in questionable circumstances?
