High School Sorted Her Out of Sports. Decades Later, She Won Silver at the World Dwarf Games

Julie Dickson spent her childhood doing what kids do when no one’s keeping score: riding bikes, swimming, moving for the pure joy of it. Then high school arrived with its rosters and rankings, and somewhere in that sorting process she got the message that she wasn’t a sporty person. She believed it for decades.

Para powerlifting changed that. The sport found her later in life and handed back an identity she never knew she’d misplaced. At the World Dwarf Games, she won a silver medal, but ask her what mattered and it wasn’t the podium. It was the community. Competitors cheered one another through disqualifications. Everyone chased personal bests instead of someone else’s defeat. That medal felt wholly, finally hers.

Dickson put it this way: these experiences showed her something her younger self naturally knew before high school’s uniformity made her forget. She was a sporty person. Her story is a reminder that the environments we pass through can shrink us, and the ones we choose can restore us, at any age.

What’s something you ruled out as a kid that you’d love to try now? Tell us in the comments.
