Greenville Police officially closed their investigation into Hayden Panettiere’s death on October 28, 2026, concluding the case as an accidental death with no signs of foul play or trauma. The actress was found unresponsive at a Greenville, South Carolina residence on August 16 and pronounced dead at 36. On September 22, the coroner ruled the cause as toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, Alprazolam, Methocarbamol, and Quetiapine, manner accidental. The DEA had joined the investigation in August amid reports of an apparent overdose leading to cardiac arrest, and her ex Brian Hickerson confirmed he was at the scene that night.

Panettiere was candid about her health battles, chronicling postpartum depression and alcohol and opioid addiction in her 2026 memoir. Her father, Skip Panettiere, announced her death and called her“an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her.”Her ex-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko, father of their 11-year-old daughter Kaya, said he will always speak of her mother with respect and make sure Kaya remembers the person she was.

The case closing doesn’t close the conversation. Fentanyl’s role in celebrity overdose deaths and the pressures young performers face remain front and center, especially for fans who grew up watching her. Her family, Klitschko, and Kaya are left mourning a loss her father described as immeasurable.
