Girl Ultra has one of those origin stories that sounds made up but isn’t. Mariana de Miguel was 15, using a fake ID to sneak into Mexico City clubs to see Chromeo. Now she’s released RRRomeo, an entire album co-produced by Chromeo’s Dave 1.

The collaboration came together after Dave 1 discovered her music during the SoundCloud R&B wave around 2017-2018. During the pandemic, he did something he’d never done for another artist: handed over his raw Pro Tools sessions and stems. Girl Ultra filtered those clean funk grooves through darker instincts, pulling in dub, synth-pop, darkwave and tropical textures inspired by Mexico City nightlife. Buscabulla shows up on“MentirasMentiras.”

The album’s mission is bigger than the sound. Girl Ultra says modern nightlife has become too self-conscious, with phones making people afraid to dance or make out. So RRRomeo is a nudge back toward physical desire, and the album cover makes that literal: actor Sergio Mayer Mori making out with her for four hours, unpaid. Her words:“I wave my flag of PDA and just making out.”

RRRomeo is out now. What’s the last album that actually made you want to get up and dance? Let us know.
