George Lucas and Mellody Hobson officially opened the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles on Saturday, and they brought out everyone. Oprah Winfrey, Queen Latifah, Samuel L. Jackson, Tyler Perry, Spike Lee, and Magic Johnson were all on hand at Exposition Park for a celebration years in the making. The night wrapped with a drone show narrated by Winfrey and Jackson, followed by a Black Eyed Peas performance.
The museum itself is a $1 billion project spanning roughly 300,000 square feet, with more than 100,000 square feet of gallery space across over 30 galleries. Inside, you’ll find illustration, comics, film-related artwork, and other forms of visual storytelling. Lucas has said the goal is to give illustrators and popular visual artists the recognition they’ve long deserved.
