Gary Sinise is sharing the story behind the years he spent out of the spotlight. In a candid interview with People, the actor revealed that his son Mac died in 2024 at 33 from chordoma, a rare bone cancer. Mac went through four and a half years of treatment, trying 25 different medications along the way, and his family says he kept attending Mass, learning harmonica, and watching Cubs games right up until the end.

Sinise stepped away from acting in 2020, two years after Mac’s diagnosis, to focus on his family. During that same period, his wife Moira battled breast cancer and degenerative lumbar disc disease that left her disabled. His daughters Ella and Sophie remember being present for Mac’s final breath, and Sinise says he never lost hope that doctors would find the right treatment.

He’s expanding on that story in his memoir“Graceful Warrior,”out later this month, which honors Mac’s life and the resilience of a family that held together through multiple health crises at once. How has your family supported each other through a difficult season? Drop your story in the comments.
