Futurama went from space to the sea for its newest episode, and it brought two legendary TV theme songs along for the ride. Season 14 Episode 8, titled“Ocean’s Three,”drops the Planet Express crew into a story that mashes up Gilligan’s Island, The Love Boat, and Waterworld. That’s three kinds of ocean chaos colliding in one half-hour.
The episode also remixes both classic themes into“Phil Again’s Island”and“The Laff Boat.”The first uses song to explain the plot, while the second takes a swipe at the laugh track. Showrunner David X. Cohen said the writers seized the chance to honor“some of the all-time great sea adventures of TV and film,”and he praised director Crystal Chesney-Thompson and the animators at Rough Draft Studios for the visuals.
