Twenty-two years after Fox’s“The Swan”turned extreme makeovers into a competition, the women who lived it are telling the world what it cost them. A new Hulu documentary,“The Swan: Behind the Mirror,”premieres September 29, and the stories are as dark as the show’s premise. Contestant Kari Bravata says she nearly died after surgery when fluid filled her lungs. Kristy Garza says improper veneers led to six teeth being pulled and that aftercare was practically nonexistent.
The details get worse from there. Contestants say they endured up to 15 surgeries in a single session and were expected to work out while wrapped in bandages. They also say they were blindsided by a televised beauty pageant the show never told them about, and were warned they would owe money for their procedures if they quit. Director Erin Lee Carr calls“The Swan”one of the most sadistic reality shows of all time, and argues it paved the way for today’s cosmetic-obsessed culture, where filler, filters, and weight-loss drugs are just part of the background noise.
What makes the documentary linger is the contradiction at its center. Despite everything, some former contestants say they would do it again. Is that healing, desperation, or just proof of how badly we all want to be seen? The doc asks the question without handing you an easy answer. Would you ever trade your health for a shot at a total transformation? Tell us in the comments.
