A Comanche County arrest warrant was issued Wednesday for Tavion Dashawn Murphy, 30, in connection with a July 30 assault on two female staff members at the Chief James Smith Correctional Center in Lawton. Murphy faces a felony count of assault and battery on a corrections officer after prosecutors say he attacked his unit manager and case manager. The unit manager suffered a closed head injury, facial contusions, and other injuries, according to court records.
Investigators say Murphy declined to speak with them about the incident. With four prior felony convictions on his record, he faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. He is currently being held at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester as the case moves forward.
The case puts a spotlight on something Lawton families know well: corrections work is dangerous, and the people doing it are our neighbors. Chief James Smith staff keep the facility running day in and day out, and incidents like this raise real questions about safety, staffing, and support for officers after violent encounters. We’ll continue following the case as it develops.
