Duncan Sheik, "Barely Breathing" Singer and Spring Awakening Composer, Dies at 56

Duncan Sheik, the artist behind one of the most recognizable songs of the 1990s, has died at 56. The New York Times reports he passed Thursday in Manhattan from cardiac arrest, days after his family shared that he had been hospitalized in critical but stable condition. A statement posted to his Instagram on Friday called him a singular talent and a deeply influential voice in music and theater.

Fans first met Sheik through“Barely Breathing,”his 1996 single that earned a Grammy nomination and became a permanent fixture on pop radio. Rather than stay in that lane, he moved into theater and composed the score for Spring Awakening, a musical that won him two Tony Awards and helped redefine what a modern Broadway sound could be. His work also reached the screen, with scores for films including American Psycho and The Secret Life of Bees.

Sheik is survived by his wife, Nora Ariffin, and their daughter, Ines. His family said he passed away surrounded by love. His music crossed generations, from 90s radio fans to theater kids who grew up on that score, and today both are mourning the same loss.
