A Stephens County man is behind bars on a $250,000 bond after Duncan police say he assaulted his ex-girlfriend with a knife and then tried to escape custody twice. Matthew Lamar Stevison, 30, of Duncan, faces felony charges of domestic assault and battery with a deadly weapon and escape from felony arrest or detention.
According to court records, the victim told Duncan Police Officer Ethan Lang that Stevison jumped on top of her in bed with the knife, threatened to kill her and himself, and cut her hand. She required stitches at the hospital. When officers arrived, Stevison fled, hid behind a shed, ran through nearby woods, and was eventually found hiding under a neighboring porch. Later, at the jail, he tried to run from a police unit, tripped, and was placed in leg irons.
Because of prior felony convictions, the assault charge carries a possible sentence of 20 years to life in prison if he is convicted. A preliminary hearing conference is scheduled for 9 a.m. Nov. 4 in Stephens County District Court. Stevison is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
