Kevin Williamson took the stage at the Barbara Berlanti Heroes Gala in Santa Monica on Saturday to accept the Hero Award, but he spent part of his speech looking back at the star who made his show famous. The Dawson’s Creek creator remembered James Van Der Beek, who died in February at 48 after a battle with colorectal cancer, with a tribute that was equal parts roast and love letter. Williamson said the actor“started out as a brat,”calling him up to ask why he had to say words nobody would understand.
That pushback, though, turned into something special. Williamson told the room that Van Der Beek became“the soul of the show”and“the ultimate upgrade.”The character of Dawson Leery was based on Williamson’s own childhood, which makes the bond between creator and star even more meaningful. Van Der Beek played Dawson for six seasons from 1998 to 2003, and the show remains one of the defining teen dramas of its era.
Van Der Beek is survived by his widow Kimberly and their six children. Kimberly shared a tribute in August marking their first wedding anniversary since his death. His legacy stretches well beyond the creek, from his unforgettable cry face to the way he shaped a generation’s idea of what a teen drama could be.
