Dave Grohl has never been shy about his love for Taylor Hawkins, but the story he just told on Jimmy Kimmel Live! is next-level heartwarming. Grohl recalled meeting Hawkins backstage at a festival while Hawkins was drumming for Alanis Morissette. A blond, surfer-type dude walked up and said,“Yo, dude, I love your band.”Grohl says he knew in that instant: we’re gonna be best friends for the rest of our lives.

The other revelation? Alanis Morissette is basically the matchmaker. Grohl says she’s the one who pointed Hawkins toward Foo Fighters, even asking him what he would do when Dave asked him to join. Hawkins left her band in March 1997 and hopped straight into Foo Fighters while they were finishing The Colour And The Shape. He went on to play on eight albums, including future classics that are now inseparable from his drumming.

The story landed during Foo Fighters’week-long residency on Kimmel’s show, and four years after Hawkins’death, it’s a reminder of how much joy that friendship created. What’s the Foo Fighters song you’ll always associate with Taylor Hawkins?
