Dave Grohl has never been shy about mixing music with a message, and the Power to the People Festival got the full treatment. During Foo Fighters’set, Grohl dedicated“My Hero”to“my new friend Jack,”with former special counsel Jack Smith reportedly in the crowd. Then came the detail everyone’s still talking about: an Iowa Hawkeyes T-shirt, worn as an apparent nod to Senator Eric Schmitt’s attempt to get Smith to perjure himself before Congress.
The set wasn’t all statements. Grohl took a moment to look back on campaigning for John Kerry, and he honored his late mother, Virginia, who taught in Fairfax County public schools for 35 years. Then he did what Grohl does and ran the crowd through“Times Like These,”“All My Life,”“The Pretender,”“My Hero,”“Best of You,”and“Everlong.”Earlier in the night, he joined Tom Morello on stage to cover KISS’“Rock and Roll All Nite.”
Music, memory, and a T-shirt that did a whole lot of talking. What’s the best concert moment you’ve ever witnessed live? Tell us in the comments.
