New York’s weekend belonged to the unexpected crossovers. Daniel Boulud, the chef behind some of the city’s most celebrated restaurants, walked across the street from his new Brasserie Boulud at Lincoln Center and onto the Metropolitan Opera stage last Friday. He appeared in Act II of“La Bohème”as the owner of Café Momus, turning a classic opera night into a genuine celebrity sighting. His Lincoln Center restaurant has already hosted the likes of Fran Drescher, Al Roker, Yo-Yo Ma, Alain Ducasse, and Eric Ripert, so the cameo felt like the natural next step.
Over at the New York City Wine&Food Festival, Machine Gun Kelly joined Anthony Anderson and festival founder Lee Brian Schrager onstage Sunday to debut Coffee Culture, the festival’s first non-alcoholic event. MGK discussed his 27 Club Coffee shops in Cleveland and Miami and confirmed plans for a Brooklyn location, even joking that he stopped doing cocaine and looked for a better high. The festival’s Trade Day opened with Sylvester Stallone and Jennifer Flavin promoting Carbonadi vodka, and Bryan Cranston poured Dos Hombres mezcal for attendees.
Between a chef stealing an opera scene and a rock star pouring lattes, this weekend proved that New York’s food and culture scenes are basically one big crossover episode. So which moment would you have wanted a front-row seat for: Boulud on the Met stage or MGK’s coffee debut?
