Constance Zimmer just shared news she’d been carrying privately for seven months: she was diagnosed with Stage 0 breast cancer, also known as DCIS, on March 13. The actress, 55, posted the announcement on Instagram to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, revealing she is now cancer-free.
In her post, Zimmer explained that most doctors recommended a mastectomy, but she sought a second opinion from breast surgeon Dr. Kristi Funk. She said Funk was the first doctor who made her feel like what she wanted mattered, and she opted for a lumpectomy, which ultimately required three surgeries in three weeks. She went through radiation while promoting FX’s Love Story and celebrating an Emmy nomination, keeping the entire journey out of the public eye.
Zimmer’s reason for speaking up now is simple: she wants women to get checked before symptoms appear. She’ll share the full story on her Talk Fifty to Me podcast on October 6. Have you scheduled your annual screening yet?
