Comanche County’s last jury term of the year is officially underway, and it’s carrying some of the heaviest cases our local courts see. Monday brought the opening of the first-degree murder trial of Victor Michael Bacca, 43, of Lawton, accused in the April 2025 shooting death of Quin Heminokeky. According to investigators, Heminokeky’s body was found in a trash can in a Lawton alley. Bacca has prior felony convictions, including three second-degree burglaries and a 2016 firearm charge.

Two child exploitation cases are also on the docket. Juan Isaac Gonzalez-Santana, 23, of Lawton, faces charges of possessing and distributing child sexual abuse material, with the case tied to reports from Snapchat and Kik. Humberto Daniel Carrion, 49, of Laredo, Texas, faces two counts of aggravated possession after roughly 13,000 files were found on a flash drive turned over to Lawton police. Jury selection in his case begins Wednesday before Cotton County Associate District Judge Michael C. Flanagan.

On Friday, Jonas Conner Vanzandt, 27, is scheduled to begin trial on a charge of possession of contraband by an inmate. Jury service is one of the ways ordinary Lawton residents end up at the center of these cases, and this week is a reminder of how much weight that responsibility carries. What do you think about the volume of cases on this year’s final docket?
