Verityis finally in theaters, and it’s the Colleen Hoover adaptation everyone’s been waiting for. Anne Hathaway stars as Verity Crawford, a famous author left catatonic after a mysterious accident. Dakota Johnson plays Lowen, the writer hired to finish Verity’s book series, and Josh Hartnett plays Jeremy, the husband with secrets of his own. When Lowen finds a hidden thumb drive containing Verity’s disturbing autobiography, the whole story flips on its head, then flips again, and again.
If you read the book, you know the twists: Verity faking her paralysis, Lowen and Jeremy killing her, and a hidden letter revealing the autobiography was nothing more than a writing exercise. The film keeps all three, and Slate’s critic argues the adaptation actually improves on the novel by cutting its most absurd subplots. Director Michael Showalter also leans into the lavish modernist setting, turning the Crawford house into a character of its own. There are even cameos from talk-show hosts like Gayle King.
This marks Hoover’s fourth book-to-screen adaptation, followingIt Ends With Us,Regretting You, andReminders of Him. So the big question for fans: didVeritystick the landing, and is Jeremy a villain or a victim? Tell us your take in the comments.
