Colin Kaepernick’s new memoir“The Perilous Fight”is out now, and it’s already generating headlines for a story about Taylor Swift. According to Kaepernick, his mother Teresa once suggested he ask out the pop superstar during his NFL years, telling him they would be perfect together. His response?“No slight to Taylor, but she was not my type.”
But the anecdote serves a much deeper purpose in the book. Kaepernick uses it to illustrate how his white adoptive parents didn’t always understand his identity as a biracial Black man. He recounts how his mother hid a homecoming photo of him with a Black classmate while displaying a photo of him with a white date, writing,“It was disappointing to me that my mother didn’t seem capable of seeing who I really was.”
Both Kaepernick and Swift have since found their happy endings. Swift married Travis Kelce in 2026, while Kaepernick is married to radio personality Nessa Diab. The memoir, published September 15, offers a rare personal look at Kaepernick beyond his NFL career and activism. What do you think about his mom’s suggestion? Let us know in the comments.
