Night one of Chappell Roan’s Super Graphic Spectacular at the Shrine in Los Angeles came with a guest nobody had on their bingo card. Christina Aguilera walked out during Roan’s headlining set after a glowing introduction about an artist who paved the way for women in pop, then sat at the piano for a stripped-down solo take on“Beautiful.”
The surprises kept coming. Aguilera stayed on stage for“Coffee,”the ballad from Roan’s 2023 debut The Rise and Fall of a Midwestern Princess. Roan handled the first verse, Aguilera the second, and the two locked into harmony on the bridge and final chorus.
The show is bigger than the moment, though. Proceeds support trans youth and LGBTQ+ organizations through Roan’s The Midwest Princess Project, with Tinashe and Lola Young also on the bill. Night two lands October 22 with Caroline Polachek and MUNA. Aguilera said she became an immediate fan the moment she heard Roan’s voice. Which duet pairing do you want to see surprise a crowd next?
