In a stunning turn of events, Hulu has officially canceled the much-anticipated reboot of“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,”leaving fans—and star Sarah Michelle Gellar—feeling blindsided. The reboot, titled“Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale,”was set to treat audiences to a fresh take on a beloved classic, with Gellar making a comeback in a recurring role. However, just as excitement soared with her recent success at SXSW, the rug was pulled out from under both her and director Chloé Zhao.

Both Gellar and Zhao felt the timing of the news couldn’t have been worse. With Gellar riding high on the success of her latest movie and Zhao preparing for the Oscars, it’s safe to say their disappointment was compounded by the circumstances surrounding the cancellation. Social media erupted with anger from fans who were eager to see Buffy’s legacy continued, and many took to calling out Hulu for the shocking decision while calling for Netflix to scoop up the project.

It’s a tough blow for the Buffyverse, especially after waiting for over a year since the reboot was first announced back in February 2025. Fans were certainly ready for some new slaying action and heartfelt moments, but as it stands now, the only thing returning to the screen will be the flops of missed opportunities. Can we really call it a new Sunnydale if the vampires don’t get a chance to sink their teeth into hype?
