Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are best friends who once floated the idea that they might share a father. Apple TV took that sentence and built a whole show around it.“Brothers”premieres today, with the two playing exaggerated versions of themselves as a paternity secret surfaces during a visit to McConaughey’s Texas ranch.
The series jams together a buddy comedy, a mystery in the spirit of“True Detective,”and a plotline where McConaughey’s character toys with a run for governor. Holland Taylor plays his mother and delivers the big reveal. Meanwhile, the fictional wives and kids on the show look a lot like the actors’real families, a detail that has plenty of people talking.
Critics are mixed at best, calling it self-indulgent and unsure of its own format. But if you like watching two movie stars goof on their own mythology, this is appointment viewing. New episodes drop weekly on Apple TV.
