Lawton firefighters responding to a grass fire near Southwest 11th Street and Bishop Road on Monday discovered a dead person while working the blaze. The Lawton Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division was called to the scene, and police are conducting a joint investigation with the Fire Marshal’s Office.

The person’s identity has not been confirmed, and the City of Lawton says the circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation. No additional details have been released at this time, which is typical while investigators work to identify the person and notify family. Anyone with information about activity in that area Monday is encouraged to contact the Lawton Police Department.

The discovery comes as dry conditions across Comanche County keep local fire crews busy with grass fires. Residents near the Southwest 11th and Bishop area may see continued police and fire presence as the investigation moves forward. We’ll update this story as soon as the city releases new information.
