New details have emerged about the death of Bob Mackie, the legendary costume and fashion designer who dressed Cher and Carol Burnett for decades. According to a death certificate obtained by Us Weekly, Mackie’s immediate cause of death was a subarachnoid hemorrhage and blunt head trauma. He fell on September 11 at the home of his longtime design director, Joseph McFate, and died three days later on September 14 at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. He was 87.

His rep confirmed that Mackie had also been battling pneumonia before and after his hospitalization, and that a healthcare professional was with him when he fell. Mackie was cremated on September 17, and his remains were scattered at sea off the coast of San Diego County. His team announced his death publicly the same day.

Mackie’s career spanned more than half a century, earning him Emmys and a reputation as one of the most celebrated designers in entertainment history. Cher’s tribute captured the loss perfectly:“My dear Bob has gone up to heaven. Knowing him, he’s bringing sequins, beads and his sketch pad. Good nite sweet Prince.”What’s your favorite Bob Mackie look of all time?
