Bob Mackie's Death Certificate Lists Head Trauma From a Fall, Not Pneumonia

Bob Mackie’s death certificate has revealed a cause of death that differs from what his representative first told the public. The legendary designer, who died September 14 at age 87 at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, is listed as having died from a subarachnoid hemorrhage and blunt head trauma stemming from a fall on September 11. That fall took place at the guest house of Joseph McFate, Mackie’s longtime design director, and a healthcare professional was present at the time.

Mackie’s rep initially attributed his death to pneumonia. In a follow-up clarification, the rep said Mackie had been battling pneumonia both before and after his hospitalization, which is why the initial statement focused there. The certificate notes Mackie was cremated on September 17, with his remains scattered at sea off San Diego County.

For anyone who grew up watching awards shows, Mackie’s work is instantly recognizable. He designed for Cher across decades, created Dolly Parton’s most sparkling stage moments, and dressed Diana Ross, Tina Turner and Beyoncé. His final years included a public tribute to Parton, a full-circle moment for a designer who helped define how pop stars look. What’s your favorite Bob Mackie creation?
