Billy Corgan Says He's a Christian: "If I Can't Be Honest With Who I Am, What Am I Asking a Fan to Believe In?"

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan declared his Christian faith on his own podcast, The Magnificent Others, telling guest Michael Sweet of Stryper,“I’m a Christian as well.”In the episode, which posted September 23, Corgan credited Sweet and former Grand Funk Railroad member Mark Farner for inspiring his openness, saying he decided to speak honestly about believing in Jesus as his Lord and Savior regardless of what it does to his career.

The admission lands differently coming from Corgan, who once told Rolling Stone that God is“the third rail of rock and roll,”the topic most artists of his generation avoid. He also addressed that fear head-on during the episode, asking,“If I can’t be willing to be honest with who I am, well, what am I asking a fan to believe in?”Longtime fans may remember the thread: his 2003 band Zwan released the hymn-based song“Jesus, I.”
