Ben Affleck is sharing one of the most personal chapters of his life. In a new GQ interview published Tuesday, the actor revealed that his mother, Chris, died June 2 at age 83, and his father, Timothy, passed away recently, roughly two months later. His brother Casey confirmed their father’s death at the Venice Film Festival.
Ben got candid about the complicated parts too. He said his relationship with his father was distant in his final years, and he offered one of the rawest thoughts on grief we have heard from a celebrity this year:“Often the end of life isn’t full of wisdom and resolve. Stuff you haven’t fixed in life stays unfixed.”He also said the losses made him reflect on his own mortality and his three children with ex-wife Jennifer Garner.
The story first came up on the“Streets We Grew Up On”podcast on September 30, and now it has people everywhere thinking about their own families. Grief is not linear, and it is not always tidy, and Ben saying that out loud matters.
