Beck Teams With Mexican Institute of Sound for "Ruido Tovar" Tour: Cumbia Meets Punk Rock

Camilo Lara’s Mexican Institute of Sound is launching one of the most ambitious musical projects of the summer. Starting July 25 in Calgary, the“Ruido Tovar”tour brings together two visionary musicians—Lara and Colombian artist Eblis Álvarez from Meridian Brothers—to celebrate Mexican cumbia legend Rigo Tovar in the most unconventional way possible. With nine musicians on stage performing their collaborative album, the live show is being described as a“postmodern cumbia-punk-rock orchestra.”The album itself is a genre-bending masterpiece that fuses traditional cumbia with punk rock, psychedelic soundscapes, and experimental electronic production. What makes this even more exciting is the involvement of Beck, the iconic American rock artist, who lends his distinctive voice to“Ritmo Babilonia,”a funky reimagining of Rigo Tovar’s 1981 classic“El festival de mi pueblo.”The track captures Beck’s early album energy while embracing the tropical vibes that define the project. Created in just one week at Lara’s Mexico City studio in January 2025, the 10-song album proves that innovation and respect for legacy don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Rigo Tovar revolutionized cumbia by incorporating synthesizers in the late’70s and early’80s, and this new project carries that spirit of modernity forward.
