Barbara Barrie, the Tony-nominated actress who originated the role of Sarah in Stephen Sondheim’s 1970 musical Company, died Wednesday at 95. Her representative confirmed the death was medically assisted under New York State’s Medical Aid in Dying law, a practice Barrie supported and advocated for. She made her final public appearance just a year earlier, attending the March 2025 world premiere of Joshua Harmon’s off-Broadway play We Had a World, directed by Trip Cullman.

Barrie’s career spanned decades of stage and screen, from Company to Breaking Away to Barney Miller. She was diagnosed with rectal cancer in the 1990s and also lived with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, yet she continued to work and appear publicly. She is survived by her children Jane and Aaron, whom she shared with her late husband, Jay Malcolm Harnick.

Her death also puts a spotlight on end-of-life choice, conversations many families are having with aging parents and planning for themselves. Barrie once said,“I have a very full, active life, but what lies ahead is unknown and yet known at the same time.”What’s your favorite Barbara Barrie role? Sound off in the comments.
