Ari Emanuel’s tell-all‘Roll the Calls’was supposed to be the publishing event of the year. Announced back in January by Knopf and promoted with live Q and As, the media mogul’s memoir had every advantage. Then it debuted at number two on the New York Times best-seller list, beaten by Charles Spencer’s‘Swan Song: Diana, My Sister,’a book announced only on August 20.
The Spencer book is drawing headlines for its claims that King Charles called Diana’s death a“lottery win”and said she would be forgotten“soon enough.”The palace disputed the claims, saying grief can cloud reason and color memory, but Spencer doubled down in a BBC interview, insisting he is telling the truth. Meanwhile, Prince Harry is reportedly working on a Diana documentary.
Emanuel had his own moment in the spotlight on the promo trail, saying about parting ways with former client Meghan Markle,“Here’s the great thing: I don’t have to think about that any more.”The full list appears in the October 11 New York Times Book Review.
