Apple Watch Series 12 Siri Recap Listens to Conversations and Writes Them Down

Apple’s new Siri Recap feature for the Apple Watch Series 12 can listen to the conversations happening around you and turn them into summary notes on your watch or connected iPhone. It’s off by default and has to be manually enabled or scheduled, and Apple says audio is never recorded or stored. But the company’s own documents reportedly describe audio being briefly captured and processed through Private Cloud Compute, with recaps deleted on a seven-day rolling basis unless you deliberately save them.

That gap between the marketing and the fine print is where the debate lives. Consumer tech reporter Zach Laidlaw called it a continuous recording device that could analyze conversations without your knowledge or consent, and one of the loudest concerns is simple: you can’t tell a Series 12 from an older Apple Watch just by looking at someone’s wrist. That means any watch in the room could plausibly be listening, and nobody around it would know.

Siri Recap arrives in beta later this year alongside other Audio Intelligence features like Live Rewind, Sound Recognition, and Shazam-powered Music Recognition.
