For 27 years, the American Red Cross Emergency Communication Center at Fort Sill has operated out of the same 1920s Mediterranean-style building, answering calls from families who need to reach a service member during an emergency. That building just got a full renovation: wallpaper stripped, walls repainted, carpet replaced, and new cubicles installed across a floor with more than 65 computer stations and roughly 70 employees. Staff and leaders say the updated layout is more private and better for morale, which matters when the calls involve illness, a death, or a birth.

The Fort Sill center is unique in the Red Cross network. It’s the only call center with access to the military’s messaging system for naval ships, and it anchors the 24/7 Hero Care Network that verifies emergencies so commanders can grant leave and get service members home. Families can reach the network online, by phone, through the mobile app, or in person.

For a community anchored by Fort Sill, this isn’t just a building story. It’s about the people who pick up on someone’s hardest day, and the families on the other end of the line. If you’ve ever used the Hero Care Network, what did that call mean to your family? Let us know in the comments.
