Lawton's Westwin Elements Signs Nickel Deal That Could Reach $3.96 Billion Over 22 Years

Westwin Elements, the company running a 20-ton-per-year pilot nickel refinery in Lawton, announced amended feedstock and offtake agreements with global metals trader Traxys on Oct. 19. The deal gives Westwin an option to extend both arrangements for up to 22 years, and the nickel offtake component alone could be worth around $3.96 billion at current market prices, according to CEO KaLeigh Long.

The pilot refinery here employs about 16 people, but it’s the launchpad for something bigger. Westwin plans a $502 million commercial refinery in Natchez, Mississippi, targeting 2029 commissioning with 18,000 tons of Class 1 nickel annually. The first phase there is expected to create 134 full-time jobs at an average salary of roughly $84,000. Nickel is a critical mineral used in defense and industry, and the U.S. currently depends heavily on foreign sources, so domestic refining is a national priority.

For Lawton, the story is about a hometown operation earning long-term confidence from a global trader. The Traxys partnership started in 2025, and this extension gives Westwin reliable feedstock and a long-term market for its nickel, which reduces commercial risk as the company scales. Plenty of eyes in the industry will be watching what happens next.
