Abraham Piper has spent years building one of the most recognizable platforms in the exvangelical corner of TikTok, with nearly two million followers tuning in for his takedowns of the evangelical culture he grew up inside. As the son of pastor and author John Piper, his criticism has always carried extra weight, and extra scrutiny. In August 2023, he posted a video that reframed the whole conversation.

“I’m coming out as pro-Christian,”he said, explaining that his negativity is reserved solely for evangelicalism, fundamentalism, and conservative Christianity, terms he uses interchangeably. The clarification matters because plenty of people assumed his critiques were aimed at Christianity as a whole. Instead, he drew a line between the faith itself and the specific religious culture he left behind.

His definition of pro-Christian is also narrower than the phrase implies. It isn’t a claim that everyone should convert. It’s that everyone should be a Christian, if they want to be. That distinction puts him in a different lane than the loudest voices in the deconstruction space, and it raises a bigger question about how we talk about religion online. Can you critique a community without condemning its beliefs? Where do you land on that?
