The 2026 MTV VMAs delivered way more drama than anyone predicted. Madonna opened the show for a record fifth time and then beat Taylor Swift in four categories, including artist of the year and best album. Taylor still walked away with video of the year for“The Fate of Ophelia”and best direction, plus the inaugural VMA Artist Director honor, but Madonna clearly owned the scoreboard by the end of the night.
Then there’s Bruno Mars, who is now 0-8 in the video of the year category after another loss. He did pick up best R&B, so the night wasn’t a total shutout, but that eight-nomination losing streak in the top category is wild no matter how you slice it. The biggest surprise came from LISA, who won best pop for“Dream”over both Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift, becoming only the second Asian pop act to ever take that award. Bad Bunny also finally won best Latin for“NUEVAYOL”on his ninth nomination in the category.
Here’s the detail that has everybody talking though: only six of the 23 competitive awards were actually presented during the broadcast. The other 17 were announced in a post-show press release. So if your favorite artist won and you never saw it happen, that’s why.
