The 2026 National Book Award finalists were announced Tuesday morning, and the list is a perfect mix of literary legends and brand-new voices. Edwidge Danticat became a three-time finalist with her novel Dèy, cementing a career that’s already shaped modern Caribbean storytelling. She’s joined in Fiction by Valeria Luiselli, Hannah Lillith Assadi, Julián Delgado Lopera, and debut novelist Morgan Thomas, whose book Mad Eden is already one of the year’s most talked-about arrivals.
Nonfiction is just as heavy. Camonghne Felix, Colin Asher, Sara Nović, Joseph Osmundson, and Abdelrahman ElGendy all made the cut, with ElGendy’s memoir Huna recounting his time in an Egyptian prison. Poetry, Translated Literature, and Young People’s Literature fill out the rest of the list, so whatever you’re into, there’s a title here with your name on it.
Winners will be announced on November 18, 2026, which gives you six weeks to actually read at least one of these books. That’s doable. Pick the one that scares you a little.
Which finalist are you adding to your list first? Tell us in the comments.
