A world-class swimming pool sat in the middle of Newham, London, and a lot of local kids had never been inside it. Jeremiah Carnegie, 17, spotted that gap and brought a simple idea to the London Aquatics Centre: make lessons free. That pitch grew into Newham Future Swimmers, a two-week summer program run with Everyone Active and the NUEL Swim Club.
The numbers tell the story. 780 children took part. Week one welcomed 320 kids with zero swimming experience. Week two brought 460 more with some skill in the water. Each child got a 30-minute lesson on five consecutive days, plus water safety education and free gear, including swimsuits and goggles. Everyone Active provided pool space and four teachers; NUEL Swim Club supplied coaches and volunteers. Demand for spots outstripped what the program could offer.
Carnegie, who competed at the Aquatics GB Championships in April and serves as Head Boy at Repton School, said cost is one of the biggest barriers families face when getting kids into swimming. Drowning prevention experts say early lessons are one of the strongest protections a child can have. Carnegie hopes the program returns next summer so even more kids get their chance in the water.
