In a heartwarming twist of fate, a juvenile humpback whale found itself stranded on a sandbar in Forster, New South Wales. The whale, weighing in at a hefty 10 tons, had ventured into the Coolongolook River, but soon realized that shallow waters can be quite a snare. Thankfully, a united front of marine rescuers, including the Sea World Foundation and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, sprang into action to pull the majestic creature to safety.

In an intricate operation, heavy-duty slings were used to carefully tow the exhausted whale back into deeper waters where it could swim free. After a bit of hard work and coordination, the whale was liberated and seemed to be in good condition, aside from minor sunburn issues. With hopes high for a safe journey back to the open ocean, this young humpback will hopefully steer clear of sandbars in the future. It’s a great reminder of the importance of teamwork—whether in the water or on land, who wouldn’t want to rally for a cause as big as this giant sea mammal?
