Trump Jokes About Medal of Honor 'Threesome' With Sons Eric and Don Jr.

President Donald Trump showed up to the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library opening in North Dakota on Wednesday, July 1, ready to crack jokes—and he didn’t shy away from poking fun at his own family in the process.

During his speech, the 80-year-old commander in chief riffed on his desire to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. With Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. sitting nearby, he launched into what he clearly expected to be a lighthearted bit.“Now, as I see my two beautiful sons sitting there, I think I’m going to give one to myself, one to them and we’ll have a threesome, OK,”he said.“I’ll pick out one of the two. I’ll give them the Congressional Medal of Honor for something. For their genius at hunting, and I’ll get one for taking on Russia, Russia, Russia, or something, and we’ll have a third pair. Now I’m only kidding.”

The president seemed to anticipate the reaction before it even happened, practically bracing for impact.“This is dangerous to say, because the fake news is up there all over the place when I joke,”he explained.“I learned early on, don’t be sarcastic in politics.”It’s the kind of self-aware acknowledgment that only comes after decades of headlines born from off-the-cuff remarks.

What’s telling is how little fanfare his sons made about the bit. Eric, 42, and Don Jr., 48, appeared unfazed. Eric posted to Instagram that same Wednesday, writing about being“Proud to be an American and forever humbled to be part of this incredible journey,”while Don Jr. reposted a White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt Instagram Story that read,“Great day with a great team.”No defensiveness, no clap-backs—just family business as usual.

Elsewhere in the speech, Trump continued the ribbing, telling the crowd that when he asked both sons what accomplishments might warrant him a Medal of Honor,“they couldn’t think of anything.”It’s the kind of playful teasing that only reads as toxic if you’re determined to find toxicity in it. Family humor has always been this way—inside jokes land differently depending on who’s in the room.
